Reason for the Shortage

  • Endo discontinued its Narcan 0.02 mg/mL 2 mL ampules, 1 mg/mL 10-mL multidose vial, and 2-mL ampule presentations in 2005. The company discontinued their 0.4 mg/mL presentations September, 2006. Endo would not provide a reason for the discontinuations.
  • Abbott discontinued naloxone 0.02 mg/mL 2 mL ampules and vials in 2001. The company would not provide a reason for the discontinuation.
  • There are no manufacturers of naloxone 0.02 mg/mL strength.
  • Hospira has naloxone on shortage due to manufacturing delays.
  • Amphastar changed NDC numbers in spring, 2012.

Estimated Resupply Dates

Hospira has naloxone 0.4 mg/mL 10 mL vials on intermittent back order and the company is releasing product as it becomes available.
