Dr. Manasse became Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) on July 1, 1997. ASHP is the 30,000-member national professional association that represents pharmacists who practice in hospitals, health maintenance organizations, long-term care facilities, home care and other components of health care systems. ASHP has extensive publishing and education programs and is the national accrediting organization for pharmacy residency and pharmacy technician training programs.
Dr. Manasse received his bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the University of Illinois at the Medical Center, a master's degree in educational psychology from Loyola University of Chicago, and a doctorate in pharmacy administration from the University of Minnesota. He is also the recipient of Honorary Doctor of Science degrees from Campbell University, Mercer University and Union University. He is the author of several books and has published extensively in health sciences literature.
Prior to his appointment to ASHP, Dr. Manasse was Vice President for Health Sciences, The University of Iowa and Chairman of the Board of the University of Iowa Health System. He has served as interim vice chancellor for health services, University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center.
He has held a variety of academic, research, and administrative positions including dean, professor of pharmacy administration, and professor of health professions education at the College of Pharmacy, University of Illinois at Chicago. He also serves as a Senior Policy Fellow with the Center on Drugs and Public Policy, University of Maryland. He has adjunct professorial appointments in the College of Pharmacy and in the College of Medicine Department of Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health at The University of Iowa.
In 1996, he was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. In 1988-1989, he served as president of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. He also served as a member of the Illinois State Board of Pharmacy for thirteen years. He currently serves as Chair of the National Patient Safety Foundation at the American Medical Association. In 1997, he was appointed as a Medical and Health Care Advisor to the Office of Health Care Inspections of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
