Residency Learning System
The 2005 PGY1 and PGY2 residency standards require that "...the resident's program be designed, conducted, and evaluated using a systems-based approach. Such an approach requires that there be a direct correlation among the expectations of resident performance, the type of instruction provided, and the evaluation of resident performance." The Residency Learning System (RLS) was created in 1993 to help programs use a systematic approach to residency training. The 2006 third edition contains revisions to accommodate each of the training design and delivery requirements of the 2005 standards.
The RLS consists of a decision process and multiple tools to help programs use the decision process to design and deliver training. Tools have been categorized according to their usefulness in all residencies or specifically in PGY1 or PGY2 residencies. Tools will be added as they are developed.
