Position / Title:
Operations Manager for Ambulatory Pharmacy Services (OHSU)
Reasons for selecting this career path: My reasons for pursuing Pharmacy as a career path came from a desire to serve as a healthcare professional. After completing college I began to investigate different venues that eventually led me to pharmacy. Since those initial steps, it hasn’t taken too long for me to realize that this was the opportunity I had been seeking.
While completing my pharmacy internship we had several managers pursue other career opportunities, followed by the Pharmacy Director tragically passing away. Nursing consultants began managing the department and changing processes within the pharmacy that they did not fully understand.
At that point I became aware of the nationwide leadership shortage in healthcare and in specific, pharmacy. Upon finding the program at UW Medicine in Health-System Pharmacy Administration/Masters in Health Administration, I have only become more aware of the urgency we need to protect our services to the patient.
Interest in the NPF Executive Committee:
My interest in the New Practitioner Forum has come from serving two years on Advisory Groups (Communications and Public Affairs Advisory Group 2007-2008; Leadership and Career Development Advisory Group 2008-2009). During these two years, I began to formulate a future vision for how we as a profession can come together to continue to develop direction for pharmacy practice.
Since being involved with the Advisory Groups, I have sought to answer, “What is pharmacy’s next step?” As the future of the medical landscape changes, the New Practitioners will need to be the voice that will need to ring across the continuum of contemporary pharmacy practice.
Though the answer for the next ‘big thing’ in pharmacy may vary from practitioner to practitioner, no one can deny that it is the call of the future generation of practitioners to stake their claim in the healthcare arena as medication and treatment experts. The continual building of credibility and the pursuit of excellence will allow pharmacy to answer the call of our patients.
The New Practitioners Forum yields an opportunity to help lead and develop the future practice of pharmacy and patient care, which is at the forefront of my heart and mind.
Professional Interests:
I am interested in the development of new clinical services and areas of practice for pharmacists. Included in this is the developing metrics to ascribe a concrete value to a pharmacist in patient care.
Benefits of being involved in ASHP as a New Practitioner:
I have always agreed with the idea that one voice can easily be quieted, many cannot. The New Practitioner Forum ensures that those who have been out less than 5 years don’t get lost in their practice and in turn have a place they can find others at the same place in their practice. It is also an arena to develop new ideas and to learn about current ones. Professional networking helps a lukewarm pharmacist become impassioned about their practice and their life outside of their practice.
Fun Fact:
I play guitar and love to shoot hoops.
