The purpose of this center is to provide guidance to you, the preceptor, on ways to teach your students and to help answer your questions on precepting.
Teaching and precepting are important aspects of pharmacy education, in order to train future pharmacists with the necessary skills to become competent practitioners. ASHP recognizes the significance of precepting and has developed policy statements to reflect such:
"To encourage pharmacists and pharmacy leaders to recognize that part of their professional responsibility is the development of new pharmacy practitioners."
-Policy 0315, "Practice Sites for Colleges of Pharmacy," from ASHP Best Practices for Hospital & Health-System Pharmacy
It may be helpful to first review how the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) defines the role of pharmacy preceptors in its Accreditation Standards and Guidelines (Appendix C, page xiv)
Additionally, the Preceptor’s Handbook for Pharmacists (2009), by LM Cuellar and DB Ginsburg, and the Academic-Practice Partnership Initiative by American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) are useful resources in improving pharmacy education and practice.
