Webinar Overview
This activity provides an overview of the contrast agents used most commonly in radiologic imaging. The overview will review the uses, dosing, contraindications, adverse event profiles, and important patient screening parameters for contrast agents. Emphasis will be placed on using information about contrast agents to screen patients and promote the safe and effective use of these agents in the health system setting.
Target Audience
This activity was planned to meet the needs of pharmacists in health systems, managed-care organizations, long-term care facilities, ambulatory clinics, and academia. This activity would be particularly beneficial for pharmacists who participate in the care of patients who are likely to undergo radiologic studies.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this knowledge-based continuing pharmacy education activity, participants should be able to
- List the types of contrast media available and the common indications for use.
- Describe the safety profile of each type of contrast media available.
- Describe the pharmacokinetic properties of contrast agents.
- List the types of medications and medical conditions for which patients should be
screened for prior to the administration of a contrast agent.
- Describe nephrogenic systemic fibrosis and recommended strategies for preventing
it.
- Describe the types of patients in which exposure to gadolinium based contrast agents
increases the risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis.
