Reason for the Shortage
Morphine sulfate extended-release oral products
- Morphine sulfate controlled-release oral tablets (MS Contin) in 15 mg, 30 mg, 60 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg strengths from Purdue Frederick in the #120 package size have been discontinued.1
Morphine sulfate immediate-release oral products
- Purdue Frederick discontinued all morphine sulfate immediate-release oral products (MSIR).1
- King Pharmaceuticals discontinued production of morphine immediate-release oral tablets and oral solution several years ago.2
- Ranbaxy discontinued immediate release soluble tablets in November 2007.3

- Alpharma has morphine sulfate extended-release oral capsules (Kadian) available.5
- Morphine sulfate extended-release oral tablets are available from Endo Generics and Mallinckrodt.6,7
- Morphine sulfate controlled-release oral tablets are available from Watson in 15 mg, 30 mg, 60 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg strengths.8
