Reason for the Shortage

• Both Dey and Apotex have discontinued their metaproterenol solution for inhalation. The companies could not provide a reason for the discontinuation.
• There are no other manufacturers of metaproterenol solution for inhalation.

Estimated Resupply Dates

Metaproterenol is available in a metered-dose inhaler (Alupent) from Boehringer Ingelheim. This product does contain chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) propellant. The Federal Register has ruled that all metaproterenol metered-dose inhalers containing CFC propellants be withdrawn from the market by December 31, 2009. http://www.epa.gov/Ozone/title6/downloads/FDA_rule_3.pdf
