Recommended CE Sessions

At SM10, ASHP offers 29 continuing education programs providing practitioners and students opportunities to update their knowledge, network with colleagues, enhance your skills, and learn about the latest products and technologies for medication-use safety and patient care. While you are invited to attend any of the CE programs, here are a few we recommend for pharmacy students:

Saturday

1:00pm – 2:20pm
Navigating the ASHP Policy Process
This is the “How-To’s” for ASHP politicos! If you have a desire to move up the ladder or shake up the status quo, don’t miss out on this opportunity. ASHP student members are empowered to get involved in our policy process. Come learn how it all works and what to expect as the 2010 ASHP Summer Meeting unfolds. We will cover some of the hot topics that will come up at the House of Delegates so, if you want to be in the know, attend this session!

Monday

Models for Pharmacist Experiential Education: Effective Integration of Pharmacy Students
Do you want your hospital and health-system rotations to be all they can be? How do preceptors manage so many students with such a busy schedule yet ensure a quality experience for you? Come hear about programs who have implemented innovative and effective ways to use pharmacy students to achieve clinical and service responsibilities.

Pharmacy’s Role in Transforming Medication Safety Leadership: A Strategic Imperative
Do you want to create and sustain a culture of safety when you begin practicing as a pharmacist? Start now! Learn about the national priorities for medication safety including standards, practices, and measures. But don’t stop there – this session will help you to design the critical elements of a plan to engage senior leadership in medication safety initiatives and evaluate metrics to monitor your results.

H1N1 Update
With all the buzz about the H1N1 virus it is hard to keep it all straight! You won’t want to miss this update to review the most current data on H1N1 activity and develop a plan to improve immunization programs.

Tuesday

New Drugs in Primary Care 2010
There are always so many new products in the pipeline, who can keep up? You can! Attend this session to learn about new trends in drug development, new products on the market and in the pipeline and what it all means for you.

2:00 pm – 4:30 pm
Moral and Ethical Obligations in Providing Care: Is this Professional Meeting its Social Contract?
Have you ever witnessed unethical behavior in the profession? Is our profession becoming more or less ethical? This session will cover the significance of ethics, morals, values, and more as we explore the role of key stakeholders in the pharmacy profession working to ensure we are meeting our social contract. *Note: participants in the session are encouraged to also attend, “Professionalism – An Essential Component of the Pharmacy Practice Model.”

Current Legislative and Regulatory Issues in Pharmacy

Are you up to speed on the current regulatory and legislative issues impacting health-system pharmacists? Didn’t think so. No worries! You will be in the know after this session.

Preventing Hospital Readmissions: What Pharmacists Can Do

Preventing hospital readmissions can have a profound impact on the quality and cost of care. Learn how to identify appropriate criteria for a readmissions prevention program and develop strategies for reducing readmissions in your institution.

Professionalism – An Essential Component of the Pharmacy Practice Model
Are there factors in current pharmacy practice that may hinder you from practicing with a professional focus? We have all heard by now about the changing practice model, so where does professionalism fit in the big picture? This session will help you learn what you can do to ensure professionalism prevails.
