Continuing Education Information

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.

Some states have special requirements for program content to meet state requirements for continuing education. Please check with your state to determine if such requirements exist and to determine if these programs meet those requirements.

For Pharmacists

ASHP determines the number of contact hours for each session. Registrants may earn up to 17 contact hours (1.7 CEUs) at the 2009 Summer Meeting.

To initiate this process, attendees must record their CE online or obtain a paper form from the Meeting Info Center at the meeting. Click here for more information on recording your CE.

For Pharmacy Technicians

Educational programs at the Summer Meeting are a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)-accepted method for certified pharmacy technicians to obtain CE credit. Those programs appropriate for technicians are designated with a “T” following the ACPE number. Programs do not have to be ACPE-provider approved to be PTCB acceptable. A Continuing Education Documentation Form for Pharmacy Technicians will be available at ASHP Meeting Info. Contact PTCB at 202-429-7576 for further information.

Industry-Supported Symposia

ASHP Advantage, a division of ASHP specializes in developing customized, needs-based educational activities for pharmacists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals. Continuing education credit for Advantage symposia presented at the Summer Meeting can be processed only online at http://ce.ashp.org. Paper CE forms are not available for Advantage symposia.

Education Information

2009 Accreditation Standards for Continuing Pharmacy Education Changes We Hope You’ll Notice

ASHP is one of the largest providers of continuing pharmacy education accredited by ACPE – the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education.

The new ACPE 2009 Accreditation Standards for Continuing Pharmacy Education, went into effect on January 1, 2009.  ASHP has been working closely with our talented Meeting presenters and faculty on several areas of special significance in the new Standards. As you attend sessions this year, you’re bound to notice some changes:

  • Active Learning - Active learning, a basic principle and best practice in adult learning, means less lecture and more active participation, including interaction with faculty and other participants to improve learning, retention, and application of new knowledge and skills.  Even in the large sessions, you’ll notice faculty using innovative instructional techniques intended to engage you more fully as a learner.

  • Learning Assessments and Feedback - The Standards call for learning assessments to be part of every activity, and we’re building these assessments and mechanisms for feedback to participants into all of our CE sessions.

  • Activity Categories - ACPE's 2009 Standards designate three activity types: Knowledge, Application, and Practice-based.  At the 2009 Summer Meeting the learning activities will be Knowledge and Application-based.

  • Evaluations - ACPE’s Standards require providers to develop and conduct evaluations of each CE activity. Beyond this stated requirement, your feedback is important to us for evaluating achievement of the learning objectives, quality of faculty, effectiveness of teaching methods and materials, and perceptions of commercial bias.

  • Non-Commercialism and the ACCME Standards for Commercial Support - You probably recognize other changes we’ve made since ACPE adopted the ACCME Standards for Commercial Support early in 2007.  These standards require complete separation of continuing education and promotion. Instructional materials for CE activities, including presentation slides, undergo an intensive review process at ASHP to ensure compliance with the Standards for Commercial Support. Disclosures of relevant financial interest by everyone involved in the planning or delivery of ASHP’s CE content have been included in slides and announcements in sessions, and, in accordance with these Standards, any actual conflicts of interest were resolved prior to the CE activity taking place.

Whichever ASHP continuing education activities you choose to take part in while at the Summer Meeting we hope you’ll take home learning that “sticks” so you can better serve your patients. We’re honored to be your partner in that endeavor, and we welcome your feedback and questions to educserv@ashp.org.

Educational Objectives

2009 ASHP Summer Meeting educational programs are developed to maintain and enhance the knowledge, skills, and abilities of pharmacists and associated personnel in healthcare systems through skill building and active participation in sessions on important issues relevant to contemporary pharmacy practice. The educational goal of this meeting is to provide information and instruction on a variety of topics to enable pharmacy practitioners to provide quality patient care.

Target Audience

Programs at the 2009 ASHP Summer Meeting were planned to meet the needs of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in a variety of healthcare systems including large and small hospitals, managed care facilities, inpatient facilities, outpatient clinics, and homecare settings, as well as in academia and the pharmaceutical industry.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

You may be aware of increasing interest in an approach to lifelong learning known as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) – a process of active participation in learning activities geared to helping individuals

  • develop and maintain continuing competence
  • enhance their professional practice
  • and support achievement of their career goals.

ASHP and other national organizations support the concept of CPD, which emphasizes self-appraisal, educational plan development, plan implementation, documentation, and evaluation.  CE sessions or other activities you participate in at this Meeting may form part of your own CPD self-appraisal or plan.

Presenter Disclosure Statements

ASHP maintains disclosure information from all presenters of ASHP sponsored educational programs, including speakers and poster abstract authors. Speaker disclosures can be found in the Program Book available onsite and on introduction slides in the sessions. Poster disclosures will be displayed in the lower right corner of the poster boards.

2009 Summer Meeting Abstracts and Handouts

Abstracts and handouts from educational sessions and posters will be made available online for all pre-registered attendees. Pre-registered attendees will receive notification on how to access the handouts via email prior to the meeting. Onsite registrants can access the handouts six to eight weeks after the meeting.

Poster Presentations

Poster sessions encourage registrants to informally discuss current projects in pharmacy practice with colleagues. This is your opportunity to pick up ideas from hundreds of successful programs that have worked in other healthcare systems.  Due to ACPE standards, CE is NOT offered for poster sessions.

There are three broad poster designations. The final letter in the poster presentation number indicates its designation. The designations are as follows:

  • Evaluative Studies (E): Completed original research including new ideas or services in pharmacy practice.
  • Descriptive Reports (D): Describes new, improved, or innovative roles or services in pharmacy practice or unusual clinical cases that have not bee n formally evaluated but are of such importance that they must be brought to the attention of practitioners.
  • Research-in-Progress (R): Uncompleted evaluative studies that were in progress when the papers were submitted for presentation.

Poster Awards

Those posters describing research or projects that are related to 2009 Summer Meeting educational programming will be eligible to receive special recognition. “Educational programming” topics include those offered during the Learning Community, Series, and Hot Topics.

Posters will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Project design: clearly-defined objectives, sound methodology, appropriate analysis of data, conclusions consistent with objectives and results, etc.
  • Significance of project to the general body of knowledge
  • Overall clarity and organization of poster

Judging will be performed onsite. Authors will receive special recognition onsite, and award-winning posters will be designated as such. Certificates will be mailed to winners following conclusion of the Summer Meeting.
