Dr. Fela Viso-Gurovich is a pharmacist who began hospital pharmacy in Mexico 15 years ago. In 1998, she along with some of her students implemented the first pharmaceutical services in a pediatric hospital. For many years, she coordinated pharmaceutical services at the Hospital del Niño-DIF in Pachuca, Hidalgo.
Dr. Viso-Gurovich currently works in a public state university and teaches Pharmacotheraphy and Ethics, and Pharmaceutical Legislation. Her research area is pharmacoepidemiology, and she has published several articles in national and international journals about postmarketing surveillance and drug utilization studies.
Dr. Viso-Gurovich is an honorary member of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and is a former president of the Mexican Association of Hospital Pharmacists.
Award of Excellence: Christopher A. Hatwig, MS, RPh, FASHP, Vice President, Apexus/340B Prime Vendor Program, Irving, Texas
Mr. Hatwig works closely with Human Resources and Services Administration's (HRSA) Office of Pharmacy Affairs and the Pharmacy Services Support Center in Washington, D.C. to educate all stakeholders, and to improve the integrity and value of the 340B Drug Pricing Program for the nation's safety-net providers. Participants of the program include over 8,000 HRSA grantees and disproportionate share hospitals serving the nation's low income and uninsured populations.
The Prime Vendor provides added value by collectively representing the 340B-covered entities' purchases to secure federal sub-ceiling discounts on pharmaceuticals and discounts on other outpatient pharmacy-related products and services. In 2008, the program generated savings of over $24 million - an average savings of 16% below the Federal 340B ceiling price on its contracted products.
Mr. Hatwig received his bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the University of Arkansas. He completed residencies in Hospital Pharmacy and Hospital Pharmacy Administration at the University of Wisconsin, culminating in a master's degree in Hospital Pharmacy. Before joining Apexus, he was the Director of Ambulatory Pharmacy Services and Value Analysis Programs at Parkland Health & Hospital System in Dallas, where for 13 years he managed one of the nation's largest and more progressive ambulatory pharmacy programs serving the low-income and uninsured.
Incoming ASHP President Inaugural Address: Lynnae M. Mahaney, MBA, FASHP; Chief, Pharmacy Services, William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital, Madison, Wisconsin
