ASHP Encourages Fla. Governor to Sign Pharmacy Technician Training Bill into Law
6/4/2008
A bill requiring the registration and training of pharmacy technicians will promote and protect the health of Florida residents, ASHP told Gov. Charlie Crist in a letter sent last week.
Written on behalf of ASHP and the Florida Society of Health-System Pharmacists (FSHP), the letter encourages the governor to sign the legislation, passed earlier this month and offers details on how an appropriately educated, trained and registered technician staff will increase public safety and reduce medication errors.
The legislation requires technicians to register with the Florida Board of Pharmacy by 2010. Beginning in 2011, they would need to complete one of the following: a board-approved training program, 1,500 hours of work as a technician under a Florida licensed pharmacist or certification by a program accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.
FSHP, working with the Florida Pharmacy Association, obtained legislative support for the bill and educated state senators and representatives and their staffs on the need for technician registration and training to improve public safety.
ASHP recently launched the Pharmacy Technician Initiative , a partnership with state affiliates, to push for to achieve standardized requirements for pharmacy technician training, education, certification, and registration.
