Governor's Signature Sets Pharmacy Technician Registration, Training into Law
6/25/2008
A new law requiring pharmacy technicians in Florida to be registered with the board of pharmacy and complete an approved training program was signed this week by Gov. Charlie Crist, thanks to the efforts of the Florida Society of Health-System Pharmacists (FSHP).
Under the law, technicians must register with the Florida Board of Pharmacy by 2010. In 2011, they will also need to complete a training program approved by the Board of Pharmacy and be certified by a program accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.
ASHP will continue to work with FSHP and the Florida Board of Pharmacy to have ASHP-accredited technician training programs become the standard required by the board of pharmacy.
FSHP was among the first states to partner with ASHP in the recently launched Pharmacy Technician Initiative, which advocates for state laws that require, as a prerequisite to registration by the state board of pharmacy, completion of ASHP-accredited pharmacy technician training and certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.
