ASHP Seeks Clarity Regarding Transparency Measure
7/16/2008
ASHP has asked the National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) to clarify that its proposed resolution urging transparency in prescription drug care doesn’t apply to hospitals and health systems because the Society and Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) committees have already appropriately addressed the issue.
In a letter to NCOIL, which represents state legislators on insurance issues, ASHP noted that health-system pharmacies and P&T committees use ASHP best practices, which allow for generic substitution and therapeutic interchange. The Society’s letter emphasized that the cornerstone principles of formulary decision-making involve the consideration of patient care and unbiased reviews of biomedical literature.
