ASHP Supports CMS Exemption to Ensure Quality Patient Care
9/17/2008
ASHP is backing a recent e-prescribing exemption that is included in a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed rule. The exemption allows prescribers to send in prescription refill requests via computer fax when they can’t receive electronic transmissions using National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) SCRIPT standards.
The Society told CMS officials that the exemption would ensure that patients receive their medications in a timely manner. It also would allow pharmacies and physician offices more time to comply with the CMS e-prescribing standards related to Medicare Part D patients. The final CMS rule on the electronic prescription refill request transactions is expected in early November. Click here to read the Society's letter to CMS.
