FDA Receives $30 Million Funding Increase to Help Monitor Medications
10/15/2008
ASHP’s persistence as a member of a coalition that urges Congress to boost Food and Drug Administration (FDA) funding paid off with Congress’ recent decision to increase the agency’s fiscal year 2009 funds by $300 million. The move allows the FDA to more thoroughly monitor the safety of medications.
The Society is a member of the Alliance for a Stronger FDA, a broad-based, 180-member coalition seeking to increase FDA appropriations from Congress as the agency faces an increasing workload. In its work with the alliance, ASHP cautioned congressional staff that with the influx of new medications introduced into the market every year, the FDA must have the resources necessary for adequate postmarket surveillance. The increase is included in a $630 billion continuing resolution signed earlier this month by President Bush that extends government funding through March 2009.
