ASHP Champions Safety In Pharmaceutical Waste Comments

Safety and product integrity are issues that must be addressed if pharmaceuticals are to be added to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Universal Waste Rule, ASHP told the agency in comments last week. 

The Society urged EPA to require documentation and tracking of pharmaceutical wastes after they have been removed from a health care facility until they are disposed. ASHP also advised EPA to take a lead role in facilitating proper staff training, ensure patient confidentiality, and require that containers be closed or covered at all times.
