ASHP Policy Analysis: Pharmacists Essential to Health Care Homes
3/13/2009
Pharmacists should seek out opportunities to become involved in the health care home practice model, according to a new policy analysis paper published by ASHP.
The paper, “Pharmacists’ MTM Services Key to Health Care Homes’ Success” describes how pharmacist-provided medication therapy management services can play a key role in improving patient outcomes and lowering costs in this team-based, patient-centered care model.
The paper also looks at several medical home programs and explores how the model may be used in health care reform proposals as a strategy to reduce costs and improve care.
ASHP’s ability to conduct this type of policy analysis is an important feature of the Society’s enhanced advocacy initiative. The policy analysis papers serve to inform and sharpen ASHP's advocacy, and to help ASHP members be more effective grassroots advocates on issues that influence their daily practice and the future of the profession.
