ASHP Advises IOM on Comparative Effectiveness Research
4/1/2009
Comparative effectiveness research (CER) should focus on three priorities, ASHP told the Institute of Medicine (
IOM
) this week:
-
Practice models for delivery of patient care,
-
Use of information technology (IT)-enabled decision support systems, and
-
Effective strategies for translating CER to practice.
ASHP strongly encouraged the
IOM
to study interdisciplinary practice models that include pharmacists as members of the patient care team. ASHP also noted that those conducting CER studies should use the medication expertise of pharmacists as a primary resource.
ASHP will continue to assertively advocate for these three priorities with the
IOM
, the federal government, and other groups that are involved in CER research. If ASHP members have questions or comments about ASHP’s efforts in this area, please contact Cynthia Reilly at quality@ashp.org.
