ASHP emphasized the importance of using comparative effectiveness research (CER) to develop interdisciplinary practice models that include hospital and health-system pharmacists as direct patient care providers during a recent meeting of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) National Advisory Committee.
Cynthia Reilly, B.S.Pharm, director of ASHP’s practice development division, told the committee that CER should also focus on the use of information technology (IT)-enabled decision support systems, and effective strategies for translating CER to practice.
ASHP member, William Smith, Pharm.D., M.P.H., Ph.D., professor and Executive Associate Dean, at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy, is a member of AHRQ's National Advisory Council. Dr. Smith is the only pharmacist on the committee, and was nominated by ASHP in 2008.
