ASHP Meets With White House Health Care Reform Team
5/5/2009
ASHP, together with several other pharmacy organizations, met today with the White House Health Care Reform Team to emphasize the critical role for pharmacists in health care reform. ASHP and other pharmacy stakeholders requested the meeting to educate key leaders in the Obama administration about the unique value that pharmacists bring to patient care, and how the patient care services of pharmacists should be an integral part of health care reform.
The group described and answered questions about pharmacists’ responsibilities as medication therapy experts on the interdisciplinary patient care team, how those responsibilities should be expanded through health care reform to improve patient care outcomes, and decrease health care costs. Building on the Pharmacy Principles for Health Care Reform, developed by the group in 2008, discussion focused on:
-
Improving quality and safety of medication use,
-
Assuring patient access to needed medications and pharmacy services, and
-
Promoting pharmacy and health information technology interoperability.
ASHP and other participants stressed to the White House Health Care Reform Team that pharmacists can improve health outcomes while reducing costs by helping patients better manage their medications.
