NQF Responds to ASHP Critique of Med Management Standards
7/24/2009
The National Quality Forum (NQF) recently acknowledged the limitations of its quality measures for medication management, in response to ASHP’s call for measures that address critical functions performed by pharmacists.
The NQF’s National Voluntary Consensus Standards for Medication Management will have a major impact on the way pharmacists are able to practice, how the hospitals in which they work are accredited, and how hospitals and pharmacists are reimbursed for patient care services.
The Society called on NQF to develop more robust and inclusive measures, especially those that assess outcomes, and to create a process to pursue an ongoing and broader request of candidate measures for medication management.
In its report, the NQF Steering Committee noted that the measures do not represent the full array of measures that are needed to fully assess medication management and improve quality of care. The committee called for research and measure development to identify medication management measures that address outcomes or are closely linked to outcomes, measures that are patient-centered, and measures that provide consumers with meaningful information about care.
