Introducing an Emergency Pharmacist into Your Institution

What is the Patient-Care Impact Program?
A unique 6-month ACPE Certificate program for pharmacists designed and developed by The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.    The goal of the program is to provide long-term training that will enable participants to make a significant impact on the care of patients.

By application only, accepted participants in this 6-month program will work with mentors to complete a project in which they will develop and introduce an Emergency Pharmacist (EPh) role into their institution.

Who should apply?
Any pharmacist who is interested in implementing an Emergency Pharmacist role into his/her institution.   All participants must obtain a written statement from their Director of Pharmacy expressing his/her support of the participant in this program.

What are the goals?
By the end of this program participants will

  1. Define and implement a project that develops and introduces an Emergency Pharmacist (EPh) role into their institution. 
  2. Develop and present a poster describing the project at the 2007 Midyear Clinical Meeting.

Will there be hands-on mentoring?
Class size is limited to 10, so you’ll receive individual attention from mentors who are recognized leaders in emergency department pharmacy services.

What is required?
Participants are required to complete the following in order to receive a certificate of completion:

  1. Attend the 2007 Summer Meeting session, “Tools for Developing an Emergency Pharmacist Program and Measuring its Effectiveness” on Monday, June 25, 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. 
  2. Attend the project-planning meeting on Tuesday, June 26, 11;45 a.m.-1:15 p.m.   
  3. Implement the project in their institution between June and December 2007 with mentor and co-participant support
  4. Participate in a mid-point September teleconference with mentors and other participants, and
  5. Present a poster describing the project at the 2007 Midyear Clinical Meeting.

How much will it cost?
Participants are responsible for securing funding in order to fulfill the requirements of this program.   This includes:

  • Registration, transportation, travel, hotel, and other trip incidentals related to attending the ASHP 2007 Summer Meeting
  • Registration, transportation, travel, hotel, and other trip incidentals related to attending ASHP 2007 Midyear Clinical Meeting
  • ASHP will not reimburse or subsidize funding in any way. 

Who are the mentors?

Rollin J. (Terry) Fairbanks, MD,    MS, FACEP
Rollin J. (Terry)  Fairbanks, MD,   MS, FACEP, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, is a patient safety researcher, EMS Medical Director, and board certified emergency physician. Dr. Fairbanks holds an advanced degree in human factors engineering/industrial systems engineering and uses this background to apply safety engineering techniques and research

methodology to medical systems. Dr. Fairbanks has received funding for patient safety-related research from the NIH, AHRQ, CDC, RAND Corporation, and several foundations, and is the principal investigator for the AHRQ-funded Emergency Pharmacist Research Program. Dr. Fairbanks serves on several patient safety committees and advisory groups, regularly presents his research and delivers lectures at national meetings, and has published numerous journal articles, book chapters, and other manuscripts in the engineering and medical literature.

Daniel P. Hays, Pharm.D., BCPS
Daniel P. Hays, Pharm.D., BCPS is an emergency specialist pharmacist affiliated with the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, NY.  He received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Uniersity of Minnesora  in 2000.  Dr. Hays started as a staff pharmacist at Strong Memorial  Hospital  where he developed clinical services within the department of emergency medicine.  He has since become the director of the Emergency Medicine/Critical Care pharmacy residency program.  At the University of Rochester, he is an active member of the Emergency Medicine Research Board and Trauma Council.  Dr. Hays has recently started a clinical pharmacy program for medical students.  He has

recently begun to publish including an article within AJHP describing pharmacy's involvement in emergency services.  From 2001-present, he sits on the Monroe County task force for emergency preparedness and has assisted with training within the University of Rochester for biological/chemical/radiologic emergencies.  In 2002, he became an ACLS instructor and one of the coordinators for the medical and surgical codes within the URMC.  Dr. Hays is also the chair for ASHP's Section Advisory Group for the section of Clinical Scientists and Specialists in Emergency Medicine.

How will program be evaluated?
Participants will evaluate the content of each component immediately after and in addition, they will e asked to complete a post-evaluation at least six months after the program to assess if they were effective to develop and introduce an Emergency Pharmacist (EPh) role into their institution

Will I earn Continuing Education credit for completing this program?
After successfully completing the entire program, registrants will earn 25 hours (2.5 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education (CE) credit from five separate components.  Attendees must complete CE Request Forms for each component to obtain CE credit.    ASHP will mail validated statements of CE within four to six weeks after the final session. ACPE The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. 

ACPEParticipants will receive a Certificate of completion for their participation in the entire program. The ACPE Certificate program number is 204-0008.

No partial credit will be given for this program.
