Legislation Offers Fix for Drug Shortages Crisis

Ask Your Legislators to Vote for Drug Shortages Provisions Contained in PDUFA

Congress will soon consider the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA), legislation that contains several ASHP-supported provisions, including a requirement that drug manufacturers notify the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) when they experience a production interruption or discontinue making a drug.

It is critical that you use your credibility as a practitioner and a constituent to garner support for the drug shortages provisions in the bill. Here's what you should do:

  1. Log in to ASHP's online advocacy center External Link to ask your two senators and congressional representative to vote for the drug shortages provisions in PDUFA. Personalize the e-mail with examples from your practice site such as patients who have had to delay care or have experienced adverse effects from second-line therapies.
  2. Ask your colleagues in the pharmacy department, as well as your nursing and physician colleagues, to join you. Enlist your patients too. Every voice counts!

To help you prepare, use the resources on ASHP's advocacy page to familiarize yourself with the bill's provisions.

Reauthorization of PDUFA will help decrease the number of drug shortages that continue to affect patient care. Please take advantage of this opportunity to help raise your legislators' awareness about this critical legislation.

Feel free to contact ASHP's Government Affairs Division at gad@ashp.org or 301-664-8692 if you have any questions.

Thank you for your support of patients!
