Reason for the Shortage

  • American Regent discontinued 23.4% sodium chloride 30 mL and 100 mL presentations in 2012.
  • Baxter discontinued their sodium chloride 250 mL presentation in 2008.
  • Fresenius Kabi has sodium chloride concentrated solution on shortage due to increased demand. Fresenius Kabi discontinued 14.6% sodium chloride 20 mL vials in February 2013.
  • Hospira has 14.6% and 23.4% sodium chloride solutions for injection on shortage due to manufacturing delays. Hospira discontinued sodium chloride 14.6% solution 250 mL vials in February 2011.

  • Fresenius Kabi has 23.4% sodium chloride solution in 100 mL and 200 mL vials on back order and the company estimates a release date of mid-June 2015. Check wholesalers for availability.
  • Hospira has 23.4% sodium chloride solution in 250 mL bulk glass containers on back order and the company cannot estimate a release date. The 100 mL vials are on back order and the company estimates a release date of late- 3rd quarter 2015.
     

14.6% Sodium Chloride Solution for Injection

  • Hospira has 14.6% sodium chloride solution for injection 20 mL and 40 mL vials on back order and the company estimates a release date of August 2015 for the 20 mL vials and 3rd quarter 2015 for the 40 mL vials.
