Sarah A JohannesSchool:
The University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy, Chapel Hill, NC

Graduation Year:
2012

How and why I became interested in being appointed to the Pharmacy Student Forum Executive Committee:
Upon entering pharmacy school I joined The Carolina Association of Pharmacy Students (CAPS), a unified umbrella student organization that includes UNC’s SSHP.  During my term as President of CAPS, I was able explore my interest in health system pharmacy as well as develop my leadership skills.  It was also through CAPS that I learned of the many leadership opportunities for students within ASHP.

As a member of the 2010-2011 Leadership Development Advisory Group, I quickly learned the importance of national leadership involvement and its impact on the future of the pharmacy profession.  With the guidance of a few close mentors, I decided to pursue appointment to the PSF Executive Committee.

I believe that any student can benefit from membership within ASHP and I hope to promote student enthusiasm and involvement during my term on the Executive Committee.

Professional interests:
Hospital Administration, Cardiology

How being a member of ASHP has assisted in my personal and professional development:
Personally, my involvement with ASHP has allowed me to grow as a leader both within my local SSHP as well as on the national level.  It has also allowed me to develop strong mentoring relationships with experienced pharmacy practitioners.  These relationships have been invaluable to me as I choose a career path and search for residencies.

Professionally, ASHP has helped me to stay informed of issues facing health system pharmacy such as health care reform and new drug information.  It has also opened my eyes to the many unique opportunities for pharmacists to be a part of the health care team.

Goals for the year as a PSFEC Member:

  1. Promote leadership development among all students at the local and national level.
  2. Educate student pharmacists, particularly first and second year students, about the benefits of joining ASHP.
  3. Improve communication and collaboration among SSHP leaders and members.
  4. Facilitate idea sharing and communication between SSHP chapters in an effort to improve local programming.

Fun fact:
This past May, I traveled to Ecuador for four weeks as a part of a medical immersion program.
