Chair (2011-2012)

Michael F. Powell, MS, FASHP

Michael F. Powell, MS, FASHP is Executive Director of Pharmacy/Pathology Services at The Nebraska Medical Center and Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Pharmacy Practice, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Pharmacy. He earned BS and MS degrees in pharmacy from Ohio State University and the University of Maryland at Baltimore, respectively, and completed a Hospital Pharmacy Residency at University of Maryland Hospital.  Powell has held leadership positions in health system pharmacy in Texas, Michigan and Ohio prior to Nebraska where he directs multiple departments.

Powell chaired ASHP Advisory Working Groups on Administrative Practice Standards from 1984-1988 and Administrative Practice Competencies for the Section of Pharmacy Practice Managers from 2005-2007 and served as an alternate delegate to the ASHP house-of-delegates. He has held leadership roles in health system pharmacy societies in Ohio, Michigan and Texas.  He currently serves on the UHC Pharmacy Council executive committee.

Immediate Past Chair (2011-2012)

Scott J. Knoer, M.S., Pharm.D.

Scott Knoer, M.S., Pharm.D. is the Chief Pharmacy Officer at the Cleveland Clinic. He is responsible for all pharmacy services at the 1,300 bed tertiary care referral hospital, clinics, and cancer center, 17 family health centers, 4 ambulatory surgery centers and 8 community hospitals within the Cleveland area. He is also responsible for the Cleveland Clinic Florida hospital and clinics and the Cleveland Clinic sites in Abu Dhabi. Dr. Knoer previously served as the Director of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota Medical Center for ten years.

Dr. Knoer received his B.A. in Psychology from Creighton University and his Pharm.D. from the University of Nebraska. He completed a two year administrative residency and received an M.S. in Hospital Pharmacy from the University of Kansas.

Dr. Knoer is the Immediate-Past-Chair of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Practice Managers Section. He has served in the ASHP House of Delegates, as Chair of the Section Advisory Group on Leadership Development, and as a member of ASHP's Commission on Affiliate Relations. He also serves on the Executive Committee of the University Health-System Consortium (UHC) Pharmacy Council. Dr. Knoer has also served in a variety of local and state affiliate roles in Minnesota and Texas.

Dr. Knoer has published and spoken on a broad variety of pharmacy topics including the pharmacy practice model, pharmacy operations and automation, process improvement, leadership development, change management and disaster preparedness. Dr. Knoer is the co-creator of the ASHP Managers Boot camp, a program designed to teach leadership and management skills to pharmacists promoted to leadership positions who lack formal training.

Chair-Elect (2011-12)

Tricia J. Killingsworth, R.Ph

Tricia J. KillingsworthTricia J. Killingsworth is Vice President, National Pharmacy Clinical Services, Catholic Health Initiatives in Englewood, CO. Killingsworth earned her B.S. in Pharmacy at the University of Washington. She completed a hospital pharmacy practice residency and specialty residency in hospital pharmacy administration at St. Joseph Medical in Tacoma, Washington. Killingsworth has held health-system pharmacy leadership positions in Washington, Idaho, and now in Colorado. She currently serves as co-leader of the CHI National Pharmacy Executive Council.

Killingsworth is completing a two-year term as Director-at-Large for the ASHP Section of Pharmacy Practice Managers. She served as Chair of the ASHP Commission on Affiliate Relations, ASHP delegate, member of the ASHP Foundation Fund Raising Committee and voting attendee at the ASHP PPMI Summit. Killingsworth has held state affiliate leadership roles in Idaho and Washington and served as pharmacy representative for the Idaho Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Team Joint Advisory Committee.

Director-at-Large (2011-2013)

Laura Mark, MS, Pharm.D., FASHP

Laura Mark, MS, Pharm.D., FASHP is System Director of Pharmacy and Pharmacy Information Systems for West Penn Allegheny Health System.  Her management experience includes Nationwide Children's Hospital, McKesson MedManagement, Johns Hopkins Hospital, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and ten years as board member for a home health nursing company.   Mark has held adjunct faculty positions at Duquesne University, University of Maryland and Howard University.   She received her B.S. and Pharm.D. from Duquesne University and her M.S. in Hospital Pharmacy and completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency in Health-System Administration at The Ohio State University Medical Center. 

Mark served on the board of the Maryland Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the Washington Metropolitan Society of Health-System Pharmacists, serving two terms each as President and Treasurer.  Laura is a member of Pennsylvania Society of Health-System Pharmacists.  Her ASHP involvement includes serving as a State Delegate and  Vice-Chair of the Pharmacy Practice Management Section Advisory Group on Pharmacy Business Management.

Director-at-Large (2010-2012)

Todd Karpinski, Pharm.D, M.S.

Todd Karpinski, is Director of Pharmacy Services at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He received his Pharm.D. from Drake University and Master of Science in hospital pharmacy from the University of Kansas. He completed the ASHP-accredited pharmacy practice management residency at KU Hospital. Karpinski has held pharmacy leadership positions in both academic and community hospitals in various parts of the country.

Within the ASHP Pharmacy Practice Managers section, several leadership roles have included Chair, Management Development Section Advisory Group and Chair, Education Programming Committee. He is serving a second term on ASHP Council on Pharmacy Management. Karpinski is active within affiliate chapters and is currently President-Elect of Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists (ICHP). He has also served as ICHP Director of Professional Affairs, ASHP delegate (ICHP), and President-Elect of Gulf Coast Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Karpinski was honored with the 2007 ICHP President's Award.

Director at Large-Elect (2011-12)

James M. Hoffman, Pharm.D., M.S., BCPS

James Hoffman is Medication Outcomes and Safety Officer and an Associate Member in Pharmaceutical Sciences at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. At St. Jude, he leads medication use safety efforts and conducts research focused on patient safety event detection, patient safety culture, and clinical decision support. He is also an Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Pharmacy. Hoffman received BS and PharmD degrees from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and a MS Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He completed residency and fellowship training at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics.

Highlights of Hoffman's previous ASHP service include five terms on the Council on Pharmacy Practice, ASHP delegate to the House, PPMI summit participant, and AJHP editorial board member. Since 2003, Hoffman has been a lead author for the annual AJHP prescription drug expenditures publication.

Director, Section of Pharmacy Practice Managers

David Chen is the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists' (ASHP) Director, Pharmacy Practice Sections and the Director for the Section of Pharmacy Practice Managers. Responsibilities for ASHP include managing ASHP's Pharmacy Practice Sections and staff liaison for the Section of Pharmacy Practice Managers Executive Committee.

David has also published and made multiple presentations on quality, practice models, and methods of reimbursement for medication therapy management. Before joining ASHP he served the role as Director of Pharmacy at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, MD. Prior experience includes Director of Pharmacy positions in Texas and Florida, as well as Marketing & Sales and Regional Human Resources & Recruiting for a national pharmacy management organization. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and received his MBA from Loyola College in Maryland.
