Pharmacists Should Play Key Role in New Drug Paradigm, ASHP tells FDA

3/30/2012

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is exploring broadening the availability of nonprescription medications to include those approved for over-the-counter distribution. In comments to an FDA advisory panel last week, ASHP noted that health-system pharmacists are in an ideal position to contribute to the public health success of the new paradigm under consideration.

ASHP’s comments pointed to studies showing the benefits of pharmacist participation in multidisciplinary care models. The Society noted that the criteria for over-the-counter distribution should weigh the concerns about patients’ substantial self-care role against the benefits of pharmacist oversight in these drug therapy regimens, including monitoring patients for adverse drug events, drug interactions, and therapeutic response.

ASHP’s comments also pointed to the need for innovative reimbursement and payment models in order for pharmacists to receive compensation for time spent consulting with consumers and to avoid potential increases in out of pocket costs to patients. The Society noted that increased costs may discourage patients from seeking treatment and negate potential cost savings to the health care system.
