Pre-meeting Workshops

Advance your knowledge with a pre-meeting workshop. You must be a full Midyear Clinical Meeting registrant to attend pre-meeting workshops and pay a separate fee.  The registration fees for full-day workshops include lunch and refreshments during breaks.  Enrollment is limited and sessions fill up fast so register soon. There is no on-site registration available for workshops.  Registration must be received on or before October 29. 

ASHP reserves the right to cancel a pre-meeting workshop due to reasons that make it impractical or unreasonable to conduct.  If that occurs, each registrant will be issued a full refund.

Residency program directors learn how to meet the new accreditation standards for a system-based approach to the design, delivery, and evaluation of training.  Participants learn how to apply direct observation to assess resident performance as they develop skills for making and recording criteria-based judgments. Emphasis is placed on providing written feedback that enhances resident learning and documents resident progress for program directors and others on the residency preceptor team.

With the rapid adoption of Health Information Technologies (HIT) within many hospitals and health-systems, many of you struggle with what technology should be implemented and what time line should be followed.  Pharmacists are involved in managing multiple projects under competing priorities.  The goal of this workshop is to provide a common set of tools that can be utilized in small and rural hospitals, community hospitals, and large academic teaching hospitals.  This session will provide you with tools to help manage risk and determine ownership of projects.  Skills to be targeted include: readiness assessment with gap analysis and action plan; planning implementation without disruptions to existing operations; project management  for implementing practice changes; benchmarking and metrics pre- and post-implementation; self-assessment on Computerized Prescriber Order Entry (CPOE), Barcode-Enable Point-of-Care (BPOC), and robotics/automation.


Basic Statistics Short Course for Pharmacists

Learn how to apply basic statistical tests to research reports typically seen in medical literature.  This workshop explores the most commonly used tests including: t-tests, analysis of variance, tests for equivalence, z-test of proportions, odds ratios and relative risk ratios, chi-square, correlation, and linear regression.  Practical examples and problems drawn from scientific research will be used to illustrate statistical concepts and mathematical procedures.  Emphasis is on the appropriate use of statistics and the interpretation of their results.

Pain Management and Symptom Management 101: Clinical and Administrative Responsibilities of the Pharmacist

The role of today’s pharmacist in the care of patients with pain and related symptoms is expanding across all practice and patient population continuums.  Participants within this workshop will progress collaboratively in a group setting through case and best-practice vignettes to learn and apply several core aspects of pain and symptom management.  These include basic physical assessment skills needed by advance practice pharmacists working within the pain and palliative care setting; advanced opioid and adjuvant analgesic pharmacotherapy pearls; and common symptoms and how to address them within palliative/hospice care settings.  Additionally, best-practices in innovative practice design and documentation will discussed. This workshop is for pharmacists with basic knowledge of pain management and palliative care principles interested in further developing their clinical skills in this area.
