Council Discussions and Legislative Day Meetings Influence How You Practice
Policy Week (September 17-21, 2012) is held each year as the kick off to the Society's policy making process and is the foundation of ASHP's advocacy efforts.
Members of ASHP's five policy-recommending councils and the Commission on Affiliate Relations, which are appointed by the ASHP President, spend two days deliberating the profession's most pressing issues. The results of these deliberations are reviewed by the Board of Directors and then approved by the House of Delegates during its session at the Summer Meeting in June.
These policies are a key part of ASHP's advocacy efforts and form the basis of our outreach to decision makers like Congress, quality organizations, and other stakeholders.
Issues to be discussed by the Councils this year include:
- Preparation of pharmacists for future roles
- Transitions of care
- Provider recognition
- Leadership roles for pharmacy technicians
- Clinical aspects of biosimilar use
- Medication overuse
Legislative Day
Policy Week participants also take part in the Society's annual Legislative Day. Members meet with the Congressional representatives and their staffs to educate them about pharmacists' patient care roles and to garner support for ASHP's top legislative priorities.
The week wraps up with a meeting of the ASHP Board of Directors.
