Why is ASHP Discontinuing Drug Shortage Information via RSS Feed?

ASHP partners with the University of Utah Drug Information Service to disseminate drug shortage and alternative therapy recommendations to its members and has done so since 2001.

The primary mechanism for that dissemination has been through ASHP’s Drug Shortage Resource Center on the main ASHP website.

In 2005, ASHP also enabled easier dissemination of the data through RSS (“really simple syndication”) feeds. Because of the nature of RSS feeds, no registration information was ever collected from those using the service.

In 2016, ASHP and the University of Utah began development of a new platform for hosting the drug shortages database for access via mobile devices and desktop computers. This platform is built on a powerful API that further expands the capabilities of ASHP to distribute the drug shortages content to a much wider audience beyond its members and in a format that allows third parties to easily develop their own applications and interfaces to the data.
