“Keep your eyes on the stars and your feet on the ground.” –Theodore Roosevelt
Yesterday was a “feet on the ground” kind of day. There were a lot of new patients, some of whom were particularly complicated. It is easy to forget to keep my “eyes on the stars” when things get busy at the clinic. That is why I am thankful for my involvement in ASHP; a conference call over lunch allowed me to step back and remember why I love being a pharmacist. Speaking with other ambulatory care pharmacists throughout the country about their successes and failures has always been my primary motivator to stay involved with our Section.
Are you interested in becoming more involved with the Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners? Applications are being accepted through April 1st for appointment to one our five Section Advisory Groups and our Educational Steering Committee. The five section advisory groups are: Ambulatory Care Medication Management, Clinical Practice Advancement, Compensation and Practice Sustainability, Home Infusion, and Pain and Palliative Care. You may learn more about the focus of each group and their role within the section here.
The A3 Collaborative will be launching their third learning cohort later this spring. This 12 month learning opportunity is designed to help organizations implement new or expand existing comprehensive medication management (CMM) services by providing access to individualized coaching, resources, and tools to build the business case for an effective CMM strategy. Twenty-eight teams are currently taking part in the 2017 – 18 learning cohort. I was particularly inspired by the story of Marshfield Clinic in Wisconsin. They were able to improve quality measures related to diabetes, hypertension, and high risk medications in 2017. They will be expanding their program to care for additional patient populations in 2018. To learn more about the A3 collaborative, you may view the participation package or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Applications for the next cycle are due by April 30th.
\As the snow starts to melt in the Midwest, I have begun to think about summer and that means the ASHP Summer Meeting June 2-6, 2018 in Denver, CO. The ambulatory care programming at the summer meeting is always so inspiring and this year will feature educational sessions about the use of telehealth to expand access to care, layered learning approaches in the ambulatory care setting, and community based pharmacist practitioners. I am especially looking forward to the popular Ambulatory Care Pearls session. Be sure to register for Summer Meetings; early bird registration ends on April 26th.
Thank you for all that you do for your patients, your learners, and your organizations. Remember that the Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners is here to serve and support your professional practice, development, and networking. Please reach out and let me know what more we can do to continue to support you in these areas.
