SACP Chair Message May 2019

May 2019

Last week I attended the graduation ceremony for the class of 2019 at the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy.  Proud faculty members, family, and friends celebrated these talented students and commended them for their hard work, sacrifices, and accomplishments.  Some of these new pharmacists will begin residency and fellowship, whereas others will enter the workforce or graduate school.  All of the graduates leave behind Pharm.D. classrooms to begin their professional careers.  While new pharmacists achieve this important milestone, undergraduate students plan for their matriculation into pharmacy school in a few short months, their own dreams of starting their pharmacy education just beginning.

The ASHP Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners has its own season of endings and beginnings.  I will complete my term as Chair in June, and new members of the Executive Committee have been slated for election.  This year we will say goodbye to the Section Advisory Group on Home Infusion, and I want to personally thank Susan Kleppin, Bryan Schuessler, Barbara Petroff and all members of this SAG, past and present, for their contributions to advancing home infusion pharmacy practice.

Reflection is always an important component of professional growth and leadership.  As my year as Chair comes to a close, I have thought about all that I have experienced while in this role.  I have been immersed in a stellar community of committed, enthusiastic, hard-working ambulatory care pharmacists who are establishing new and innovative models of care that improve the lives of their patients.  I have witnessed the creativity and energy that Section Advisory Groups have poured into resources that support ambulatory care pharmacy practice. I have been inspired by ASHP members who have devoted themselves to a lifetime of service to others.  Here are just a few highlights of SACP contributions to the mission of ASHP this year:

  • Representation at ASHP’s Policy Week, Regional Delegate Conference, Strategic Planning Retreat, and House of Delegates

  • Redesign of the Section Advisory Groups

  • Creation of a new precepting resource entitled Ambulatory Care Learning Experiences

  • Development of new FAQ documents about Compensation and Sustainable Business Models, Home Infusion, and Pain Management

  • Presentation of multiple ambulatory care symposia and networking sessions at the ASHP Clinical Midyear Meeting and ASHP Summer Meeting

  • Presentation of webinars on palliative sedation and mentoring.

Thank you for the privilege of serving as the Chair of SACP this year.  I am excited about all that lies ahead for the Section under the very capable leadership of Zach Weber who will be sworn in as Chair during the House of Delegates in June, and look forward to continuing my service as Immediate Past Chair.  I hope to see many of you at the ASHP Summer Meeting in Boston in June! And now my watch is ended, and Zach’s begins.

Best Regards,

Mollie Ashe Scott, Pharm.D., BCACP, CPP, FASHP
