I appreciate the opportunity to reach out to all of you in the Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists one more time. It has been a jam-packed, exciting year! As I near the end of my role as Chair of the Section, I have been reflecting upon all that has been accomplished and I’m looking forward to upcoming events.
First, the Executive Committee took a hard look at our Vision and Mission this year and revised it to reflect not only who we serve, but also why the Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists is your professional home. So, hot off the presses, I wanted to share with you our updated Vision and Mission:
SCSS Vision: To represent clinical and scientific experts and advocate for practice advancement to improve patient care.
SCSS Mission: As specialists and scientists, we will collaborate, educate, and innovate to advance pharmacy practice and optimize patient outcomes. Our Section serves as a professional home for growth and mentorship of pharmacists.
Each year the Executive Committee not only takes a look at the mission and vision, but also the SCSS Strategic Plan and updates it to reflect practice changes and the ASHP Strategic Plan. You can check out the Section’s Strategic Plan from 2018 here: ASHP Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists Strategic Plan 2018-2019 We’ll be reviewing and updating the 2019-2020 Strategic Plan this year in Boston at the Summer Meetings.
Speaking of the Summer Meetings….. The ASHP Summer Meetings and Exhibition is set for June 8-12 in Boston. I hope to see many of you at the meeting where you can take part in four different tracks of educational and networking sessions, including the Ambulatory Care Conference, Medication Safety Collaborative, Specialty Pharmacy, and Influencers and Innovators. Join other like-minded peers in this unique conference setting.
The Summer Meeting is also the official start of ASHP’s calendar year with the inauguration of new officers and board members and the proceedings of the House of Delegates, which is an integral part in ASHP’s policy making process. If you are attending the meeting and are interested, you can observe the Open Forum to share your views on emerging issues with ASHP officers, Board members, and Policy Council chairs. There are several policies that will be discussed for approval on the floor of the House. You can check out the policies and discussion for each on ASHP Connect; and as an ASHP member, you can add your thoughts or concerns on each proposed policy. In addition, you can observe the caucuses, House meetings, and the “Meet the Candidates” session to hear from candidates slated for election for ASHP President and Board of Directors.
The Section Advisory Group on Emergency Medicine has been working hard all year combining and updating the ASHP Statement on Pharmacy Services to the Emergency Department and the ASHP Guidelines on Emergency Medicine Pharmacist Services into a singular comprehensive guideline. This updated guideline is currently open for comment. Review the guidelines here and submit comments NO LATER THAN May 24, 2019.
We also have a couple of webinars coming up this month that may be of interest to you. The Pediatrics Section Advisory Group is presenting a webinar on the newly FDA approved EPIDIOLEX on May 28th at 1 pm EST . You can register for it here: Cannabidiol: Blazin’ a New Trail in Seizure Disorders The Clinical Leadership Section Advisory Group is presenting on the SCCM Guidelines for the Prevention and Management of Pain, Agitation/Sedation, Delirium, Immobility, and Sleep Disruption in Adult Patients in the ICU on May 29 at 1:00 pm EST.
