It is that time of year again when the leaves begin to change, students/kids are back at school, and football is in the air. Coinciding with these events I am excited to initiate my year as Chair of your Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists (SCSS) to improve patient care as described in the Section’s Mission and plan. Aligned with this, earlier this month I had an opportunity to attend ASHP Policy week in Washington D.C. advocating for the profession and our patients (#4ourpatients) at legislative day and through policy development. Meeting with the Congressional offices to not only advocate, but also help ensure their understanding of pharmacists’ patient care roles was an essential and rewarding experience.
How can you become more involved in policy? The call for committee recommendations for appointment are currently being accepted for the 2020-2021 term. The deadline for recommendations is November 15th, 2019. So, go ahead and toss your name in and feel free to reach out to myself or any of the council members to gain a better understanding of the role.
The Section achieves a number of deliverables through Section Advisory Groups, commonly referred to as SAGs, Committees and through the work of our Roundtable Discussion Leaders. Again this year the rosters are top notch with a fantastic array of pharmacists from across the county volunteering their time and talents to contribute in this fashion. One new initiative to watch out for is the rolling out of ASHP Podcasts to enhance education and networking offerings.
- SAG on Clinical Leadership
- SAG on Emerging Sciences
- SAG on Emergency Care
- SAG on Pediatrics
- Nominations Committee
- Education Committee
Additionally, the Education Steering Committees and others are devising education and resource centers to enhance our ability to care for patients.
Lastly, I want to recognize those that will be working for you on the SCSS Executive Committee for the year alongside our Section Director Vicki Basalyga. Directors-at-Large are Katelyn Dervay (FL), Jodi Taylor (TN), and Karen Berger (NY), along with Immediate Past Chair Audrey Kennedy (MO) and Chair Elect Joel Marrs (CO). It is my pleasure to serve as your Chair this year and collaborate with the diverse membership practice areas of the Section.
