Chair Message January 2017

Jennifer Robertson, Pharm.D., BCPS

January 2017

Dear Colleagues,

The recent Midyear Clinical Meeting (MCM) in Las Vegas was the largest Midyear to date. It’s always a bit of a whirlwind for me, but I was able to attend several sessions that our Section developed and a networking session too. I hope you were able to enjoy Section of Inpatient Care Practitioner (SICP)-planned activities as well!

Some important highlights of the MCM were:

  • Numerous networking sessions – If you were unable to attend the MCM or didn’t get to your focus area’s networking session, please refer to discussion summaries on ASHP Connect. Many thanks to all our volunteers, including Marjorie Shaw Phillips, Jason Bergsbaken, Julie Golembiewski, Trisha LaPointe, Denise C. Fields, and James R. Rinehart.
  • A funny and motivational keynote address by Peyton Manning (otherwise known as the Nationwide® guy)
  • Great programming for our Small and Rural Hospital Practitioners - Thanks so much to our speakers and moderators, including Brock Slabach, Linda Spooner, Jillian Foster, Alexander Quesenberry, Debra L. Cowan, and Jeannell Mansur.
  • Distinguished Service Award reception (see below)
  • Much more!

Many of the educational session materials (slides) are available here: http://connect.ashp.org/midyear/home.

Distinguished Service Award – Noelle RM Chapman
Each year during the MCM, ASHP Sections and the New Practitioner Forum (NPF) recognize an outstanding member whose volunteer activities have supported the mission of their Section or NPF and helped advance the profession. This year, SICP honored Noelle RM Chapman, Pharm.D., BCPS, FASHP, Pharmacy Operations Manager and PGY1 Residency Program Director at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, IL, with the SICP DSA. She is responsible for inpatient operations, clinical services, and coordinating residency experiences. Dr. Chapman is a graduate of the 2011 Pharmacy Leadership Academy and was named a fellow of ASHP in 2015. She served the ASHP SICP as Director-at-Large from 2010-2012 and as Chair from 2012-2015. Currently she is a delegate in the ASHP House of Delegates and is serving on the ASHP Council of Pharmacy Practice. Congratulations Noelle!

Advanced Pharmacy Technician Role Case Studies – Please Submit!
These case studies are available on the Pharmacy Technicians Resource Center and sponsored by the Advancing Pharmacy Practice with Technicians Section Advisory Group. The case studies describe unique positions and responsibilities of pharmacy technicians. If you are looking for ways to use pharmacy technicians in more specialized ways to free pharmacist time, consider reviewing these descriptions of pharmacy technicians who specialize in pharmacy purchasing, informatics, prior authorization, medication history and reconciliation, and more. The case studies also outline necessary tools and resources, training requirements, and lessons learned along the way.

You can submit your own examples of advanced pharmacy technician roles by filling out the template and emailing it to sections@ashp.org.

In other news, don’t miss these recent items from ASHP:

I thought this article was really interesting: Looking back on 2016 in Pharmacy News. These are the 10 news stories from 2016 that were viewed most often on the ASHP website. If you are interested in being more involved in the Section or with ASHP, please consider volunteering to be on a Section Advisory Group (SAG) or the Educational Steering Committee (ESC). Watch for information in ASHP and Section NewsLinks; members may nominate themselves. The nomination survey will open on January 31st. Remember that current SAG and ESC members must submit their name every year to be considered for reappointment.

The ASHP 2017 Summer Meetings and Exhibition will be open for registration on January 19, 2017. The meeting will be held in Minneapolis, MN, June 3-7, 2017. Details coming soon!
