Chair Message May 2018

May 2018

Dear Colleagues,

May is always such an exciting time of the year for so many reasons! It is a time to enjoy warmer (hopefully!!) weather and outdoor activities. Every May, the University I work for celebrates its graduation in a large ceremony at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, and to me, this signals that summer is quickly approaching. I love that summer always kicks off with the ASHP Summer Meetings and Exhibition. This also provides a time to reflect on the productive year our Section has had thus far.

At the April meeting of our Section’s Executive Committee, the chairs and vice chairs of each Section Advisory Group (SAG) and Educational Steering Committee (ESC) provided an annual report of the activities and projects they have completed throughout the year. It is amazing to hear how many initiatives each group has been actively pursuing and how they have come to fruition. For example, the SAG on Pharmacy Practice Experiences completed a Busy Day Toolkit for preceptors including modules on Lab Monitoring, Biostatistics, Anatomy of an Article, Investigational Drug Service, and Approaching a Drug Information Question. This toolkit is easily accessed via the ASHP website, and it is very handy for preceptors of pharmacy students who find themselves unexpectedly pulled away from their students on a hectic day. The SAG on Advancing Pharmacy Practice with Technicians has been developing resources to define technician roles in drug diversion prevention including position descriptions and investigation templates. The SAG on Medication Safety has developed several useful tools including Medication Safety Activities and Tasks Prioritization for Multi-Hospital Organizations and the Medication Safety Activities Tasks Prioritization Small and Rural Hospitals was developed in cooperation with the Small and Rural Hospital SAG. The Education Steering Committee that organized and presented the webinar on Why Can’t We Be Friends? Professionalism In and Out of the Classroom . These are just a couple of examples of the outstanding work being completed by the members of our Section.

Quickly approaching, this year’s Summer Meetings will be held in Denver, Colorado from June 2-6, 2018. As in past years, specific and focused education and networking are planned in specialization areas with the ability to sample other areas of interest. The boutique meetings programming will focus on four key areas, including ambulatory care, medication safety, informatics, and pharmacy practice and policy. With such a variety of topics and formats for presentations and networking, it will truly be a productive and fun way to expand our knowledge in so many ways. I am looking forward to interacting with colleagues and gathering new ideas to bring back to my hospital and university.

During the Summer Meetings, the Section Meet and Greet will allow the members of our Section to interact in a more casual way after hours; I always enjoy meeting new people and seeing how their practices are similar yet different from mine. This year, the Meet and Greet will be held on Sunday, June 3rd at 7pm in the Strata Bar on the main level of the Hyatt Regency . I hope to see many of you there! I’m also looking forward to attending the House of Delegates caucuses and meetings as the representative for our Section. This will be my first time serving as a delegate, and I am excited to take it all in. The link https://summer.ashp.org/ provides a great deal of information related to the Summer Meetings, including meeting schedules, special events, and travel information. I hope to see everyone there!

As always, please feel free to contact me at any time with any thoughts, input, or questions at sections@ashp.org . I look forward to continuing to work with you all!

Sincerely,

Linda
