SICP Chair Message November 2020

November 2020

Dear Colleagues,

It’s just human nature – we all want to find a great deal. Recently I’ve become obsessed with finding the best deal for a new GPS watch to use on my trail runs and long distances. Despite endless hours of online searching (hours I would rather be outside, running!), I still have not found the right deal that softens the flow of such a big purchase.

Luckily, some deals are much easier to find. One of those is the ASHP 2020 Midyear Clinical Meeting, scheduled virtually to be held December 6 - 10 (Sunday through Thursday). We will all miss the chance to connect face-to-face this year, but the virtual conference will offer a myriad of opportunities to learn, explore and network – all from the comfort of your own home or office. Look for more than 175 hours of recorded and live content including highly-relevant COVID-19 sessions, engaging keynote speakers Tom Hanks and Dr. Anthony Fauci, Specialty Board Recertification sessions, virtual poster sessions, residency showcases, and personal placement services.

Registration is now open. Remember, it’s free for pharmacy students, pharmacy residents, and pharmacy technicians, so encourage those around you to attend as well. If the cost of travel has been a barrier in the past, this is a great way to introduce others to the outstanding programming that ASHP offers.

Come join the virtual roundtable discussions planned by members of the Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners! (NOTE: All times are EST.)

  • Sunday from 1:00 - 2:00 PM - Investigational Drug Services
  • Monday from 10:00 - 11:00 AM - Compounding Practice
  • Monday from 1:00 - 2:00 PM - Precepting Students
  • Tuesday from 1:00 to 2:00 PM - Small and Rural Hospitals
  • Wednesday from 1:00 - 2:00 PM - Medication Safety

Also, consider volunteering to serve as a student and resident poster mentor during the Midyear. Every year many SICP members enjoy this opportunity to mentor upcoming practice leaders. Student and resident poster presenters are eager to share, learn, and expand their professional network. I have served as a mentor in the past and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The registration deadline is Monday, November 23, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. (Pacific), so don’t delay!

I had the opportunity to participate in ASHP Policy Week that was held virtually in mid-September. One of the week’s highlights was speaking with Congressional representatives as part of the ASHP Kansas contingent. We discussed three important topics with them: 1) Preserving 340b pricing for health systems, 2) Pharmacy reimbursement for telehealth services, and 3) Pharmacy reimbursement for COVID-19 testing supplies and vaccines. The experience reminded me of how important it is to advocate for our profession and patients as we move through a fall election season and a new Congress in January. Each day, I also observed the ASHP policy making process. I have a much better understanding of what goes into creating good policy for our organization, and I’m in awe of the dedication and time shown by the members of our ASHP Councils.  Our section will have the opportunity to review and comment on any new policies under development, as they are released for comment in late 2020 and early 2021.

Before I close with this month’s message I would like to take the time to congratulate the confirmed Chairs and Vice Chairs of each SICP Section Advisory Groups (SAGs) and Educational Steering Committee (ESC). They are already hard at work, leading the committees that will develop programming for the section including new tools, webinars, and podcasts.
