So much going on! It’s fall - school and football are back and there is pumpkin flavor in everything we eat or drink. Most importantly, the Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners (SICP) Section Advisory Groups (SAG) are back in action and ASHP just completed 2019 Policy Week! Let me start with Policy Week. All I can say is, what an experience to witness this part of the ASHP policy process firsthand! ASHP has five councils whose role is to bring forth and develop policies for ASHP - Public Policy, Therapeutics, Education and Workforce Development, Pharmacy Practice, and Pharmacy Management. The Councils spent the week discussing policy, what position ASHP should take, and how these policies will impact pharmacy practice. My role at Policy Week was to observe the discussions on the issues that were most relevant to SICP. Observing meant that I couldn’t chime in with an opinion – a challenge for me sometimes! The process is great though, and there will be opportunity for the Section to weigh in before Regional Delegate Conferences. The other exciting part of Policy Week was ASHP Legislative Day, where we visited our representatives’ offices on Capitol Hill and talked all things pharmacy. I was able to meet with two of my Oregon legislators, Representatives Earl Blumenauer and Suzanne Bonamici as well as the health care staff members from the offices of Oregon Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden. One theme that came out loud and clear is that these Senator and Congressional representatives and their staff love to hear from constituents! If you have a couple of minutes, drop them an email or letter and let them know you are a pharmacist, you live in their district, and what is important to our profession. ASHP has legislative advocacy resources that can help you out with this.
As with all ASHP events, it was a week of meeting new colleagues and re-connecting with current friends. Networking is one of the biggest perks of active ASHP membership and it was once again alive and well at ASHP Policy Week. Speaking of which…the Midyear Clinical Meeting is just around the corner, so if you are coming to Vegas, “save the date” for our SICP Social Hour (Sunday, December 8, from 5:30-6:30 at Eye Candy in Mandalay Bay). It would be great to meet you!
Many of the SAGs have already met or will be meeting soon to start their very important work of creating tools and resources to help us take care of our patients. I’m looking forward to seeing the great work produced by our very talented SAG members this year.
Finally, I would like to welcome our two newly-elected members of the SICP Executive Committee, GregORY Burger (Chair-Elect) and Allison King (Director-at-Large Elect). Looking forward to the year!
