William's Story

William T. Lee R.Ph., M.P.A., FASCP, (Bill) is a graduate of the University of Illinois, College of Pharmacy. He has a Master's degree in Public Administration and is a Fellow of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists. Previous to his present position at Carilion Clinic as the Senior Director for the pharmacy system, he was the Regional VP for Comprehensive Pharmacy Services for the Midwest region and also was the Divisional VP for Remote Verification Services managing over 42 hospitals. His experience entails a background in hospital practice both large and small as well as in ambulatory and retail sector with experience in long-term care, assisted living and home health operations. He also has a background in managing drug wholesaling and managing employee benefit programs. He was the principal lead pharmacist that was involved with the development of MedLynk, a wireless cart development with Herman Miller Milcare division. Bill was the main principal investigator and recipient of a $4.2 million dollar Innovation grant from CMS in 2012 and demonstrated the role and value of pharmacists in the medical home environment. His two most recent publications were in the AJHP in 2016 and in 2018 describing the IHARP project. He was the only pharmacist that was awarded a CMMI grant in all of Virginia in 2012. Bill also is president-elect of the Roanoke region for VSHP and also is a delegate to the USP convention representing Virginia for VPHA. Bill is also active on the Transitional Care committee for ASCP and serves on the National Advisory Committee for VCU College of Pharmacy. Bill is a non-federal member of the FIW workgroup, a federal interagency workgroup of the FDA focusing on preventing adverse events in patients that are diabetic or on anticoagulants and opioids. Bill is licensed in 16 states.

Facility

Carilion Clinic is a 1200 bed health system comprising of seven hospitals of which the largest is an 800-bed DSH acute care trauma -1 center located in Roanoke, Virginia. They also have two critical access hospitals and also one that has a community based outpatient clinic providing services with the VA in rural Tazwell. Their patient base includes overs 28 counties and a patient base of over 1.2 million lives.

Carilion has more than 200 ambulatory clinics and has been an ACO model since its inception. They have signed onto the Next Gen initiative and Carilion Clinic is the largest healthcare system in Southwest Virginia. Carilion Clinic utilizes Epic as their EMR and is fully integrated into all of the hospitals and the clinics and have been on the system for over 9 years.

Recent Significant Projects

Bill has been involved with the CMMI IHARP project, (improving the health of at-risk patients in rural population) and also the A3 collaborative (focusing on the medication management of the diabetic population at Giles Community Hospital in Giles, VA He is also the co-chair of the subcommittee on education for the Opioid Task Force of Carilion Clinic.
