His Story

Dr. Kufel received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He went on to complete a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at the State University of New York Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, NY and a PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency at University of North Carolina Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC. Dr. Kufel is also board certified in infectious diseases and pharmacotherapy by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties and an HIV-certified pharmacist by the American Academy of HIV Medicine.

Dr. Kufel currently serves as the infectious diseases network facilitator for the Section of Clinical Specialists and Scientists. He previously served on the Membership and Outreach Advisory Group as part of the New Practitioners Forum and selected as the case writer for 2018 ASHP National Clinical Skills Competition. Dr. Kufel is also the founding faculty advisor for the SSHP chapter at Binghamton University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. He provides service to his state and local chapter where Dr. Kufel is on the education and programming committee as well as the faculty liaison committee for the New York State Council of Health-System Pharmacists and is the president-elect for the local Southern Tier Chapter of Health-System Pharmacists.

Overview of Facility/Health System

Dr. Kufel is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at Binghamton University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Binghamton, NY. Dr. Kufel is also a clinical infectious diseases pharmacist at the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, NY, where he provides clinical service for the infectious diseases consult team and the antimicrobial stewardship program. SUNY Upstate University Hospital is a 472-bed, tertiary care, level-1 trauma, academic medical center. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University where he provides clinical education to medical students, medical residents, and infectious diseases fellows.

Significant Projects

Dr. Kufel's research interests are in the areas of infectious diseases, antimicrobial stewardship, interprofessional education, and Lyme Disease. Dr. Kufel was a recent recipient of the ASHP Foundation's New Investigator Research Grant to evaluate clinical outcomes for patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia using an innovative and collaborative approach.

Advice for Someone New to Your Specialty Area

"Make connections. Infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship are growing areas in clinical pharmacy. There are so many excellent infectious diseases pharmacists around the world with a varying degree of experiences, interests, and career paths. I have made numerous collaborations with infectious diseases pharmacists from all over that have helped me get to where I am in my career today. Don't be afraid to branch out and network!"
