Thomas W. Cooley is the Director of Pharmacy Informatics and Support Services at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, where he is primarily responsible for pharmacy informatics and technology with focus on designing, developing and implementing safe medication administration systems across the institution. He contributed to the design, development, and implementation of several information systems at BWH, including CPOE, adult, neonatal intensive care and hematology-oncology pharmacy systems, eMAR initiatives, an integrated investigational drug management information system, and the incorporation of barcode technology in the medication-use process and point-of-care systems. Cooley is also responsible for the Research Pharmacy Service, and the Business Systems and Operations team.

Cooley received a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of New Mexico (UNM) and Masters of Business Administration in Health Systems Management from the UNM Anderson School of Management. Prior to beginning his career at Brigham and Women’s Hospital he worked in several roles at St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe, New Mexico, including Director of Pharmacy.

Cooley currently serves as a member of the Section of Pharmacy Informatics and Technology Advisory Group on Operations and Automation, and the Vizient Medication Use Informatics and Technology Committee. He served as a subject matter expert on the 2013 ASHP Foundation Barcode Medication Safety Panel and previous Vizient committee work included several years on the Research and Education Committee. Cooley has published, presented and consulted both nationally and internationally in the field of Pharmacy informatics and on the integration of bar code technology into medication use systems and patient safety.
