NPF Advisory Groups

The ASHP New Practitioners Forum has six advisory groups that provide advice and guidance to the Forum regarding the unique needs of new practitioner members and how these needs might be addressed by the provision of resources and programs by ASHP.

Career Development Advisory Group

Scope: Support career development in advancing the evolving educational and informational needs of new practitioner members.

2020 - 2021 Charges:

  • Expand CV resources to include other non-traditional paths and support job application requirements.
  • Conduct a gap analysis to identify future resources to support new practitioners transitioning into official precepting roles as a new practitioner.
  • Identify and create tips/innovative precepting models to combat burnout and maintain well-being and resilience.
  • Continue innovative poster design project and encourage virtual presentations at local/affiliate ASHP meetings.

Clinical Practice Advisory Group

Scope: Support new practitioners with optimizing the care they provide to their patients.

2020 - 2021 Charges:

  • Create member resource on giving a patient case presentation. 
  • Create member resource on how to quickly evaluate literature with corresponding podcast interview of an expert.
  • Identify a checklist and/or tip sheets for telehealth.
  • Refer back to Gap Analysis for more research ideas to support new practitioners.

Leadership Development Advisory Group

Scope: Support career development in advancing the evolving educational and informational needs of new practitioner members.

2020 - 2021 Charges:

  • Engage ASHP Fellows (FASHP) in a formalized mentoring program.
  • Identify best practices for marketing yourself in the virtual environment.
  • Identify best practice and support resources to lead virtually as a new practitioner leader.
  • Reflect on how new practitioners can be a leader and design conversations for leadership conversations.

Legislative Affairs Advisory Group

Scope: Facilitate new practitioner engagement in advocacy and legislative affairs opportunities.

2020 - 2021 Charges:

  • Create elevator speeches on practice issues that are relevant/current advocacy efforts.
  • Assist with identifying advocacy opportunities and best practices focused on the PAI 2030 and ASHP initiatives.
  • Review NPF Advocacy Toolkit.
  • Identify resources to support the new practitioner role in emergency planning.

Membership and Outreach Advisory Group

Scope: Promote and grow membership through active involvement in ASHP.

2020 - 202` Charges:

  • Review video testimonials on “What I wish I knew at 30: Lessons and career advice for new practitioners” and plan for future testimonials.
  • Plan and execute NPF Networking Session at 2020 Midyear Clinical Meeting.
  • Serve as expert panel with ASHP-SSHP liaisons to identify opportunities to support SSHP members and promote opportunities/benefits of professional organizational involvement post-graduation.
  • Support new NPF Twitter handle.

Resident Advancement Advisory Group

Purview: Promote membership, serve the evolving educational and informational needs, and support career development of pharmacy residents.

2020 - 2021 Charges:

  • Identify best practices and create support for navigating a busy residency interview season.
  • Conduct a gap analysis of ASHP Match Days resource page.
  • Review PPS preparation guidance and best practices for marketing yourself in a virtual environment.
  • Identify “Life hacks” for attending ASHP Meetings.
  • Review ASHP Workforce Well-Being and Resilience resource page.

Advisory Group Eligibility Requirements

The Chair of the New Practitioners Forum will appoint nineteen new practitioners to each advisory group for a June - May term. Advisory groups communicate primarily via e-mail and conference call on a periodic basis. Attendance at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting is encouraged as the advisory group members have the opportunity to meet face-to-face. Prior elected / appointed leadership is NOT required, however, appointments are competitive. 

All nominees must:

  • Be a member of ASHP.
  • Graduated from pharmacy school in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, or 2020.
  • Willing to participate in all conference call meetings throughout the year.

Application Instructions

Step 1: Complete the electronic application form.

  • CV
  • A brief statement describing your ASHP AG interest (250 words or less)
  • Note: For individuals seeking appointment as the Advisory Group Chair, you will be prompted to address your leadership style and meeting management skills in the application.
