Hello New Practitioners,
As October comes to a close, we are rapidly approaching the ever important mid-term elections. Just as this day will help shape the face of local and national government, the annual appointments to ASHP councils and committees offer faces, new and old, an opportunity to represent their profession on a national level. There are a number of opportunities for involvement, which I would like to highlight below.
ASHP Councils: The five councils (Education and Workforce Development, Pharmacy Management, Pharmacy Practice, Public Policy, and Therapeutics) are the primary bodies that initiate ASHP policies on professional issues and advise the Board on ASHP activities within their respective purview. Each of the councils is comprised of seasoned practitioners along with one new practitioner and one student.
ASHP Committees: New practitioners have the opportunity to apply for one the Forum's five Executive Committee (EC) positions. The EC advises ASHP on programs and services related to the interests of their group and make policy related to their purview. Additionally, each EC member oversees the work of one of the Forum's five advisory groups (Career Development, Clinical Practice, Legislative Affairs, Membership and Outreach, and Resident Advancement).
How to apply: Information can be found on the ASHP website . Besides recommending oneself, you can also recommend a colleague. ASHP President-Elect, Kathleen Pawlicki, will appoint members with terms starting summer 2019. The deadline for application submission through the online portal is November 15th, 2018.
Having been involved in leadership positions within ASHP since my time as a student, I can say it has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career. Your voice truly matters and is important. You are also given the chance to both propose and implement change that directly impacts the organization and profession as a whole. Please strongly consider applying or recommending a colleague you feel would be a valuable addition. And don't forget to rock the vote!
