ASHP Launches New Online Continuing Education Site

BETHESDA, MD—The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists recently launched a new learning management system (LMS) that allows pharmacists and other health care professionals online access to educational activities and products designed to improve their competency in providing care to patients.

The site provides continuing education (CE) credits and learning modules about a variety of therapeutic, management, and practice-related topic areas, including numerous offerings to prepare for a Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) certification examination or earn recertification credit.

"ASHP has always been a leader in providing quality pharmacy continuing education,” said ASHP Chief Executive Officer Paul W. Abramowitz, Pharm.D., FASHP. “This exciting new endeavor allows practitioners an even more convenient way to access the information they need to make the best clinical decisions for their patients.”

The eLearning site features a Core Therapeutic Module series that will help pharmacists who plan to take a BPS exam customize their own self-study programs on various topics or disease states and gain a comprehensive level of knowledge in a number of topic areas, including diabetes, congestive heart failure, management of shock, psychiatric disorders, statistics, women's health, cardiac arrhythmias and advanced cardiac life support, and HIV/AIDS.

The site also offers a number of other resources to assist candidates for the BPS exams in pharmacotherapy and ambulatory care and those certified in these specialties. Included on the eLearning site is a BPS Pharmacotherapy Certification Examination review course. The site also features Literature Study Modules, which provide articles on contemporary topics related to the five domains of ambulatory care specialty practice. These are available for recertification CE credit.

The eLearning site features courses based on ASHP’s best-selling DVD, Compounding Sterile Preparations: ASHP's Guide to Chapter <797>. These courses provide an in-depth look at USP Chapter <797> requirements and recommendations, proper procedures for compounding and handling sterile products, procedures for monitoring and quality assurance, and proper facility controls and personnel training requirements.

Over the next 24 months, ASHP will continue to develop the eLearning site to ensure that ASHP members and other learners have a full catalog of educational offerings that span all areas of pharmacy practice. Through the use of enrollment codes, pharmacy directors or other administrative personnel can track staff progress in completing educational activities to improve competency, including documentation of the same.
