Update: National Pharmacy Organizations Take Action Against Racial Injustice

Published: October 16, 2020
ASHP Press Release

Led by the National Pharmaceutical Association (NPhA), 15 national pharmacy organizations recently released a statement highlighting actions the groups have taken to address systemic racism and discrimination. The joint statement builds on one issued in June in which the groups pledged to prioritize actions that ensure that the entire pharmacy profession is working together to create change.

“The Pharmacist’s Oath compels us to assume responsibility to care for those who are disproportionately suffering,” said Lakesha M. Butler, Pharm.D., Immediate Past President, NPhA. “I am elated by the collective and individual actions taken by each of the pharmacy groups to examine the impact racism has on our society and the ways our profession can take the lead in healing our communities.”

The updated statement includes additional commitments made by the organizations to address long-standing manifestations of racism on social determinants of health and persistent health disparities and issues of racial equity, diversity, and inclusion.

“ASHP is proud to join NPhA in this effort at such a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, said ASHP CEO Paul W. Abramowitz, Pharm.D., Sc.D. (Hon.), FASHP. “We believe that we have an obligation to our members and the patients they serve to help our profession and our country move society at large to one that is more embracing and accepting of all of those around us.”
