ASHP Policy Position 8304

IMPAIRED PHARMACISTS

Status:

To support the American Pharmaceutical Association program of activities to assist impaired (chemically dependent) pharmacists. These activities include:

  • Survey state pharmaceutical associations and schools of pharmacy to determine the current level of interest and activity in developing programs for impaired pharmacists;
  • Prepare a list of associations and schools of pharmacy that have programs, including short descriptions of these programs;
  • Develop guidelines for associations and schools of pharmacy to use in planning and implementing their impaired pharmacists programs;
  • Distribute guidelines and other information in kit form to state associations and schools of pharmacy with a recommendation that they initiate efforts to develop programs for impaired pharmacists;
  • Publish articles on the current level of program activity and other related areas in American Pharmacy; and
  • Ask Alcoholics Anonymous to hold meetings at the National Meeting of APhA's Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences and at the APhA Annual Meeting.

Further, to disseminate information on such programs to members of ASHP through ASHP meetings and publications.
