How I Got to Where I Am Today

I was extremely fortunate to have been given several inspiring role models throughout my career. Although they did not know each other, each of these fine individuals, in their own way, provided me with the encouragement, guidance and courage to advance beyond the norm and to push myself beyond my “comfort zone.”

Like many of you, I became active in the profession of pharmacy as a student, then as a resident and ultimately into my first position as an Assistant Director of Pharmacy at Yale-New Haven Hospital. My primary area of interest was (and remains) legal and regulatory affairs. I made frequent presentations at the State Capitol / the Legislature or the Board of Pharmacy advocating on behalf of health-system pharmacy issues.

In 2006, after nearly 35 years in health-system pharmacy administration, I bravely moved into the position as a professional pharmacy association executive with FSHP. In many ways it was a natural transition, a merger of sorts, between my two professional loves: pharmacy administration and governmental affairs. It is a personal and professional honor and privilege to serve my colleagues in this capacity.

Advice for Students Pursuing This Career Path

There will always be a need for professional associations to represent pharmacy. Health-system pharmacy, in particular, will continue to need strong leaders who will be able to represent this very special area of practice. My advice for students would be to remain “active” in your local, regional, state, and national health-system pharmacy organizations. There is much that you can contribute and even more that you will receive.
