January 2018

Happy New Year Pharmacy Student Forum!

Welcome to 2018 and the start of a new semester or round of APPEs. If you attended the 2017 Midyear Clinical Meeting in Orlando, we hope you took home some valuable information from our student programming, especially our guest speaker Ryan Penneau. We hope you will accept Ryan’s challenge to bring a positive energy wherever you go in the coming year. Additionally, the residency showcase was a great success with over 1900 institutions in attendance to highlight their residency programs. Check out some other highlights of the conference on ASHP TV.

The final rounds of the ASHP Clinical Skills Competition were also held at Midyear. One hundred and thirty-five teams of student pharmacists from across the country competed in a battle of quick thinking and patient care knowledge. On behalf of the Pharmacy Student Forum, congratulations again to the 3rd place team Zahava Picado and Emily Tiao from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, 2nd place team Justin Moore and Ashni Patel from the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy, and our 2017 Clinical Skills Competition winners Lindsay Jablonski and Mary Grace Fitzmaurice from the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy! Thank you to all teams for your efforts in creating a phenomenal competition.

The New Year is an opportune time to become aware of key issues in advocacy that matter most to pharmacy practice, such as drug shortages, 340B, and drug pricing. If you are interested in learning more about how the practice of pharmacy is impacted by the political process and taking an active role in advocacy by visiting with legislators at Capitol Hill, check out ASHP’s Advocacy Bootcamp February 26 – 27, 2018 in Bethesda, MD.

For those of you pursuing post-graduate training, I wish you the best in the coming months with interviewing and matching. I hope you will continue to engage both with your peers and the Pharmacy Student Forum as we prepare to transition into the next stage of our careers.

Best,
