Hello, Student Pharmacist!
I am delighted to announce the installment of the Pharmacy Student Forum Executive Committee for the 2020-2021 year. The Pharmacy Student Forum Executive Committee represents the Pharmacy Student Forum and its members, working together with the ASHP Board of Directors and ASHP staff to support the needs of student pharmacists. Last year, I served as the Vice-Chair, and it was a humbling experience to learn and contribute to advancing pharmacy students. This year, I am honored to serve as the Chair and look forward to all of the great work we can achieve for the pharmacy profession and for each other!
The beginning of 2020 presented many challenges with the COVID-19 pandemic; however, I am amazed at how pharmacy educators and student pharmacists have adapted and created unique and effective ways to keep thriving. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to learn more about how our colleagues have shown resilience and strength during the pandemic by reading ASHP’s Front Line Stories or listening to the daily ASHP Official Podcasts.
COVID-19 has shown the need and role that pharmacists play in infection prevention and control. ASHP continues to drive our profession forward in following our mission to help people achieve optimal health outcomes. As we go through this year, remember that even as student pharmacists, we have a voice, and we are the future generation of pharmacists that will advance the profession.
Further, ASHP, along with many other pharmacy organizations, highlighted the urgency to stand with the black community and unite against all forms of racism, discrimination, and injustice after recent events. ASHP has committed to helping and also supporting to fight against racial injustice. In June, ASHP announced the creation of a Task Force on Racial Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion that will help advise ASHP on specific, actionable steps to address matters of racial diversity, equity, and inclusion. I believe it is vital that we, as student pharmacists, are aware and continue to learn the role we can play in supporting racial diversity, equity, and inclusion. I am proud of ASHP and all other pharmacy organizations that are taking actionable measures to continue to make positive change.
We are entering an academic year filled with many uncertainties and many changes to our traditional educational experiences, as such it will be essential to be diligent and focused. Take the time to embrace and maximize learning experiences in both didactic course work and experiential experiences. Continue to engage in professional networking online through the Pharmacy Student Forum ASHP Connect community and social media platforms remembering to create short- and long-term goals to stay on track. Do not forget to utilize the numerous ASHP student resources incorporating substantial student input over many years.
Lastly, please know that the Pharmacy Student Forum Executive Committee is here for all student pharmacists. The Forum Executive Committee will always prioritize the needs of student pharmacists, ensuring that we are well-equipped to advance in our professional journey and transition to pharmacy practitioners. The Forum is an excellent home for student pharmacists and has accomplished excellent work over the years. I am confident that this year will be no different and look forward to all of the great work that we can achieve together!
